Castalia Quarry

The Castalia Quarry mitigation site is located in Erie County, Ohio, near the Castalia Quarry Reserve. The mitigation wetland comprises 22 acres of forested, scrub-shrub and emergent wetland habitats. Erie MetroParks will use the restored wetlands at Castalia Quarry for environmental education, featuring interpretive programs with staff naturalists as well as on-site interpretive signs. All restored wetlands will be category 2 and 3 wetlands, managed and maintained as wetlands in perpetuity. The Castalia Quarry mitigation site has met all of its performance goals.

Subject to the approval of the regulatory agencies, this site is an appropriate location for mitigation for wetland impacts to category 2 or 3 wetlands in the same (HUC #04100011, Sandusky River) or adjacent watersheds (HUC #04100008, Blanchard River, HUC #04100010, Portage River, and HUC #04100012, Huron-Vermilion River), and for impacts to category 1 wetlands and for impacts to 3 acres or less of category 2 isolated wetlands anywhere within the boundaries of the Buffalo District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
